10 Rice Recipes Cooked in a Rice Cooker

Despite its name, the rice cooker is not a single-minded kitchen unitasker. Sure, it is the easiest way to make perfect rice, but it’s also a convenient way to cook a wide variety of foods. Here are a few examples that might just convince you to invest in an electric rice cooker or use yours more often.

Parmesan Rice

Traditional risotto rice, arborio rice, is the best way to go. It goes great with my Lemon herb baked salmon or my pork tenderloins.

Sausage Jambalaya

All the veggies will come to the top during cooking so make sure you stir it VERY well before serving.  If you want to add chicken or shrimp I’d saute them separately and stir them in when it’s done cooking.  ALSO I usually leave my cooked rice in the rice cooker on warm while I enjoy leftovers, BUT for this dish I don’t recommend it, the sausage will turn brown (and unappealing) and the rice will get mushy.

Rice Cooker Fried Rice

Everyone knows that Rice Cookers are convenient and save time, but did you know you can cook almost anything in them? Even Fried Rice. Try this simple, fast delicious recipe that will have you craving for more. I often make this dish for bbq’s and it is ALWAYS a BIG HIT.

Cilantro Lime Rice

This rice is super easy to make, and especially if you have a rice cooker.  If you don’t own a rice cooker yet, go get one. Seriously.  I never thought we needed one because I didn’t cook rice that often.  Well, now we have rice quite a bit. Fried rice, Mexican rice, cilantro lime rice… This makes it so easy and it’s always perfect.

Rice Cooker Shrimp (Prawn) Biryani

A delicious and healthy shrimp and rice meal, cooked in a rice cooker and ready in under an hour.

Spanish Rice

Rice is an inexpensive ingredient that can really stretch the number of servings you can get from a batch of tacos, burritos or fajitas. And making spanish rice in your rice cooker could not get any easier! I love that it doesn’t have a lot of sodium and MSG like a many of the boxed varieties do. Once you see how easy it is and how delicious it tastes, I think you’ll have a difficult time going back to the boxed brands.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice is a very popular dish in Singapore and Malaysia. In fact, Singapore has claimed this as their national dish! The chicken is served either roasted, poached, or steamed. The flavor of the rice is out of this world! It’s not just plain white rice. Normally, the uncooked rice is stir-fried in ginger and garlic, then cooked in chicken broth. Yumm, right??

For this particular recipe, I toss everything in the rice cooker and let it do its magic! I used to save this dish for weekends because it was a bit of work, but using a rice cooker, I now can enjoy chicken rice even on the busiest weeknights!

Coconut Lime Quinoa

3 ingredients and insanely easy prep using your rice cooker or Instant Pot make this delicious quinoa recipe a go-to weeknight side dish. Total winner!

Ribs and Rice

Ribs and Rice is an awesome one pot meal that’s one of many great rice cooker recipes. The flavors of pork ribs, shiitake mushrooms, and vegetables infuse into the rice.

Puerto Rican Arroz con Gandules

Rice can be served in so many different ways. You can have white rice alone, white rice with a variety of beans (served on top of the rice, not on the side), and yellow rice. Yellow rice is when you really get a variety since you can mix just about anything into yellow rice: beans, vegetables, meat, etc. But, perhaps the most well-known Puerto Rican rice is arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas). Traditionally served for Noche Buena, arroz con gandules is also a big hit for a family get-together or just for your everyday weeknight dinner. (Side note: In Trinidad, where my husband is from, they call it Rice and Peas. I’m lucky he loves it as much as I do!)
